Judge personal information:

I have been involved in the cattle industry for over 18 years. During my show career, I have had many County and Ohio based champions. I have showed at every major show in Ohio and outside of Ohio, I showed nationally at NAILE, Denver and Junior Nationals. After my personal show career came to an end, I went to Ohio State University and majored in Animal Science with a specialty in Beef Production. After I completed college, I started my own business: “Richie Cattle Company”. My business consists of buying and selling cattle. I have hosted 3 sales under my company, placing high quality cattle in homes where they had the potential and opportunity to strive. Since I have started buying and selling, I have had a champion every year through the Ohio BEST program, a top 5 market steer at The Ohio State Fair, several champion breeds including; Shorthorn, Shorthorn plus and division cross. I focus highly on buying and selling. It’s important to me to travel and purchase high quality show-stock. I am fully aware of what it takes to raise a champion under a budget. I pay close attention to correct feed and daily management. I have sold cattle that have won national shows, state shows and county fairs. I have judged many county fairs, jackpots, and expos. I have also conducted many showmanship clinics with many County Cattlemen’s Associations. I stay consistent in the type and kind of animal I am looking for. I take high preference in cattle that are structurally correct and sound enough to make it around the ring correctly. I look for well-balanced steers that have “ring appeal”, and have true overall width and dimension. I look for the most desirable product that will hang the truest on the rail, which is put together in an overall package while most importantly, maintaining structural correctness. For breeding stock, I look for longevity and productivity. It is important for the exhibitors project to go back to farm and be able to stay efficient and profitable with low maintenance. I look for attractive, well-balanced, structurally correct cattle. It is important to buy and breed structurally correct cattle because when you put your stock in the pasture they must be able to walk back and forth to feed and water to maintain a healthy and efficient lifestyle, ensuring a profitable result for the exhibitor. In regards to showmanship, I am looking for showmen who are calm and collective and who maintain a strong ring presence while also being courteous to other showmen. I focus plenty on questions, because I feel showmen who are knowledgeable about their projects and have a good understanding of what it takes to get their project to the end point, set themselves apart from others. I try to split the class, so I can take the time to help explain to the bottom half of the class how to fix what they’re doing wrong and explain to them what set the winners apart. It’s important to me that each exhibitor learns something throughout the showmanship portion and I feel it is my job to send them home with something to improve on for the next show. I hope with the information I have provided, that you have a good understanding of what I can offer exhibitors as a beef judge.

Career history:
I established Richie Cattle Co. in June of 2010, a feed and club calf company. I started the business after graduating from the Agriculture Technical Institute of The Ohio State University. I have successfully exhibited animals throughout my lifetime on all levels. I also raised my own herd of shorthorn/shorthorn plus cattle. In my business I work directly with exhibitors and offer them high quality products as well as feed. I also clip and fit cattle on the side. I specialize in Kalmbach, Hubbard, and Nutrina feeds. I am a certified ShowRite feed distributor. I successfully operate out of 2 locations, one in southern Ohio and the other in Northern Ohio.
